Wire Goose
Release notes
1.0.3
Fixed
- The map no longer redraws when nothing is moving, so Wire Goose uses next to no processor time while its window is open on a quiet network. It used to redraw constantly whether or not there was any traffic.
1.0.2
Both fixes are in the copy of Wire Goose from this site. The App Store version reads traffic another way and never showed this error.
Fixed
- Waking the Mac from sleep, often just as the Wi-Fi reconnects, no longer puts an error across the top of the window.
- If reading traffic does stop for a while, its error now goes away by itself once traffic is read again, instead of staying until Wire Goose is restarted.
1.0.1
Quit, Kill and Check for Updates are in the copy of Wire Goose from this site. The App Store version is updated through the App Store.
New
- Out and In on every row. Each app shows what it sent and received in the period. Click Out, In or Sent to and the list sorts by it and holds still; click Now, over the bars, to go back to most active first.
- The operators behind each app. The arrow beside an app opens it into the companies it talked to, each with its own Out, In and Sent to. Click one, and the map, the summary and the timeline show that app's traffic to it alone.
- A light on every number. Green when the latest second stayed in your home region, red when any of it went elsewhere. It is lit while data is moving and goes dark after five quiet seconds, and on a sorted list it pulses with each new second.
- Rows show. Settings → The list chooses what each row carries: numbers, bars or both. The list opens wider, and drags out to 600 pixels.
- Check for Updates. In the Help menu: it compares your copy with the latest on wiregoose.com and offers the download. It is the one connection Wire Goose makes of its own, and only when you ask.
- Quit and Kill reach system daemons. A process that runs as root, a VPN's daemon for example, is stopped once macOS has asked for an administrator's password, and stays off until the Mac restarts.
Changed
- Quit and Kill end the app itself, not the helper that carried its traffic: Kill on a browser ends the browser.
- On a new install the map's pulses move from the start. Settings → The map → Motion still turns them off.
- About shows the version number.
- When Wire Goose starts, it brings an installed network filter up to its own version, so an update reaches the filter too.
Fixed
- Quit and Kill only ever reach a process that is still the app on its row. macOS reuses process numbers, and a quiet row could hold an old one.
